INDIANAPOLIS – Tom Crean was 166–135 overall during his nine-year tenure at IU. But, among those 166 wins, were some high quality victories. During the last six years, IU has been among the best teams in the nation when defending their home court against ranked teams. They’ve beaten two No. 1 ranked opponents in Assembly Hall during that time frame.
But, what’s puzzling are among those 135 defeats, some are to some bad schools. That’s one reason to why Crean, was let go on Thursday, because for a school to beat the teams that IU has under Crean’s direction, they shouldn’t have lost some of the games that they have.
Top 5 Wins:
5. 2/2/13 vs. 1 Michigan
This was a game that was highly publicized home matchup with No. 1 Michigan vs. No. 3 Indiana. Winner would hold Big 10 supremacy. IU would start off hot and hold on for a 81-73 triumph. What a night that was in Bloomington.
4. 3/10/2013 at Michigan
This clinched IU’s first Big 10 championship under Tom Crean as who can forget that Cody Zeller tip in or the slow roll around the rim by a Michigan player that rimmed out and sealed IU’s fate for the Big 10 title 72-71. This was a great moment for IU hoops.
3. 2/19/2013 at No. 4 Michigan State
IU never plays well in East Lansing and here they were fighting for a Big 10 championship that season needing a win in a bad way. The Spartans are IU’s kryptonite but there IU was led by Cody Zeller with a 72-68 win in the Breslin Center.
2. 11/11/2016 vs. No. 3 Kansas
What a season opening victory this year it was to win 103-99 over Kansas. It tricked us into thinking this could be a banner year in Bloomington. IU looked as good as advertised in that matchup in Hawaii. Instead, the season went downhill from there.
- 12/10/2011 vs. 1 Kentucky
This is a program changing victory. The “Wat Shot” will forever go down in Indiana history with a 73-72 victory over Kentucky on their home court. It stamped that Indiana is indeed back from the ruins. Only problem is, IU hasn’t won a championship.
Top 5 Losses:
5. 3/28/2013 vs. Syracuse NCAA Tournament
IU has had some questionable losses against far inferior opponents than Syracuse, but this loss really started the downfall or demise of Tom Crean at IU. Syracuse was a decent team but had far less talent than Indiana, and in that game, IU acted like they have never seen a zone before. Poorly coached, poorly prepared, and IU was out of the Tournament way before they should have been with a 61-50 headscratching loss.
4. 1/18/2014 vs. Northwestern
Northwestern had always struggled in Bloomington but there IU was playing Tom Crean ball against the Wildcats. The Hoosiers embarrassed this program and fan base in the ugly 54-47 loss at home to Northwestern.
3. 11/28/2016 vs. Nebraska
It’s one thing to lose to Northwestern at home, it’s another to lose to the lowly Nebraska Cornhuskers. But, this past December, IU was disinterested on defense and lost 87-83 to the lowly Huskers at home. Another team IU should never lose to.
2. 11/24/2014 vs. Eastern Washington
Another head scratching loss here. Eastern Washington was paid to come to Bloomington and play IU and they left with a 88-86 win. This is among the worst losses in Indiana’s rich programs history.
1. 11/22/2016 at IPFW
Eastern Washington may be the worst home loss in IU’s history, but losing to IPFW on the road is the worst loss in general. How in the world does a team with NBA talent lose 71-68 in overtime to a team that had a student chug bleach from the stands afterwards? This was a sign of bad things to come for the IU season and we should have known then, this was it for Crean.
