CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Cedar Rapids Kernels jumped to an early lead and never looked back Sunday, defeating the Fort Wayne Tin Caps 4-1 at Perfect Game Field in the rubber match of a three game weekend series.
A two-run double by Christian Cavaness in the bottom of the second inning pushed the Kernels in front, while Fort Wayne struggled against Cedar Rapids’ starter Clark Beeker.
Beeker held the TinCaps to one run on just four hits in his six innings of work, improving his record to 4-1 on the young season and lowering his earned run average to a pristine 1.65.
The TinCaps scored their only run of the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Fernando Tatis Jr. Cedar Rapids used just one pitcher to close out the game, as Max Cordy earned his third save of the year by working the final three frames.
Fort Wayne starter Hansel Rodriguez struggled with his command, walking six batters in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
The loss wraps up a six-game road trip for the TinCaps, who went 2-4 and return home at 11-19 on the season, good for last in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League. They will begin a six-game homestand Monday night against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Parkview Field.
