ISU Football Opens Season with 49-0 Shutout Over Quincy

TERRE HAUTE – Indiana State (ISU) football powered its way to a 49-0 win over the Quincy Hawks to open the 2018 regular season Thursday night at Memorial Stadium in front of 6,243 fans.

The Sycamores (1-0) went for 423 yards in total while the Indiana State defense was solid throughout, allowing just 159 yards in the shutout – the first shutout for an ISU defense since holding Quincy scoreless to open the 2012 campaign.

The Sycamores pounded the ball behind its experienced offensive line throughout the evening, totaling 339 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns. Nine Sycamores recorded rushing attempts led by quarterback Jalil Kilpatrick who went for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore running back Titus McCoy led all Sycamores with 81 yards on the ground to go with a touchdown, just edging senior Ja’Quan Keys who finished with 80 yards and two scores.

Freshman running back Christian Covington also pushed in his first touchdowns in a Sycamore uniform in the second half, going for 64 yards and two scores.

Another freshman made his impact on special teams, returning the Sycamores’ first punt for a touchdown since 2015. Dakota Caton, a Sullivan High School product, took a punt 71-yards to the house in the fourth quarter.

Kilpatrick managed the game efficiently, helping the Sycamores to 22 first downs on the night. He finished 8-for-13 through the air for 84 yards.

Joe Wildt and Dante Hendrix each tallied a pair of receptions for the Sycamores. Wildt had 32 yards receiving while Hendrix added 27 yards through the air.

Coming off an impressive year on the defensive side last season, linebackers Katrell Moss (9) and Jonas Griffith (8) were again at the top of the stat sheet in tackles. Another Preseason All-MVFC selection in Inoke Moala added five tackles and 1.5 tackles-for-loss in the victory.

Newcomer Dayveon Higgs recorded the lone sack for the Sycamores on the night while defensive back Nehemiah Montague put the Sycamore offense in prime scoring position in the third quarter with a forced fumble and recovery on a kickoff.

The ISU defense did not allow a play more than 12-yards until the fourth quarter of play.

The Sycamores 7-of-13 on third down and scored in all six of their trips to the red zone.

Cody Leonard led Quincy (0-1) with 11 tackles while Keenan Stegall added 10. The Hawks Chris BrInson rushed for 32 yards on 13 attempts.

The Sycamores travel to Louisville Sept. 8 to take on the Cardinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. from Cardinals Stadium.
