South Bend Cubs defeat Fort Wayne, opportunity to sweep on Monday

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Despite being outhit, the South Bend Cubs knocked off the Fort Wayne TinCaps for the third time in as many games Sunday and will have the opportunity to complete a four-game sweep on Monday afternoon at Four Winds Field.

Luis Ayala paced the South Bend attack with a pair of doubles and a run scored.

South Bend starter Manuel Rondon allowed just one run in six innings to earn his sixth win of the year. He exited with a 2-1 advantage before shortstop Zach Short hit a home run in the eighth inning to ice the game.

Fort Wayne scattered eight hits on the day, but were only able to muster one run in the fourth inning. They stranded a total of six runners on base.

Fort Wayne starter Reggie Lawson was able to go just four innings before being removed, with the bullpen’s only blemish being the home run by Short.

The two in-state rivals will wrap-up their four-game series Monday afternoon at Four Winds Field in South Bend, with the Cubs looking to complete the sweep.
