Pirates Promote Top Prospect Mitch Keller to Indianapolis

ALTOONA, PA – The number one prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization is all set to make the jump to Triple-A.

It was announced on Wednesday that right-handed pitcher Mitch Keller, the 12th rated prospect in all of Major League Baseball (according to Baseball America), will make his next start with the Indianapolis Indians

Keller’s numbers with Double-A Altoona are eye-popping. The 22-year-old owns a 9-2 record, 2.72 ERA (26 earned runs in 86 innings pitched), and 76 strikeouts.

A sensational month of June very well could play a big role in explaining why Pittsburgh chose to pull the trigger on Keller’s promotion. Keller was 4-0 with a 0.69 ERA (two earned runs in 26 frames) in four starts in June, limiting his opposition to a batting average of .131.

Keller’s final outing in that run of June dominance came on Monday, when he tossed eight innings of one-hit ball for Altoona. He will join an Indians team that is just as hot in June, with a 17-7 record thus far.
