INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Butler Bulldogs, coming off a 6-5 2017 season (4-4 Pioneer Football League), knocked off the then-ranked #24 Youngstown State Penguins 23-21 to open the 2018 season on Saturday, September 1. Butler senior WR Pace Temple played a pivotal role on offense and special teams in leading the comeback and was named STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week.
The 6-1 senior hauled in 14 receptions for 167 yards and a touchdown. He led all FCS receivers in Week 1 with 14 grabs. Two of his 14 catches came during Butler’s final drive to set up the game-winning field goal.
In between two critical drives, Temple also recovered the on-side kick that set up the Butler game-winning field goal. Temple’s touchdown came from redshirt senior QB Will Marty from six yards out with 9:20 remaining in the fourth quarter. It cut the deficit to 21-14 and helped Butler outscore Youngstown State 16-0 in the fourth quarter to pull off the comeback upset road win.
Butler will return to action on Saturday to face the Taylor Trojans on the road. Kick-off is slated for 6 PM ET.
