Oakland hands IUPUI fifth straight loss, 82-74

Rochester, MI. – IUPUI’s five-game road trip has finally ended and it wasn’t a moment too soon. With their 82-74 loss, IUPUI has now dropped five straight, all on the road, and moves to 1-14 on the road this season.

Jaylen Minnett had another strong performance with four three-pointers and 16 points. Aaron Brennan finished with 16 as well, but fouled out with one minute to go.

After giving up a season-high 49 points in the first half, IUPUI came out of the break down 13. They quickly fell behind 17 before beginning to mount a comeback. T.J. Henderson and Minnett hit back-to-back jumpers to cap an 8-2 run to pull IUPUI within 11 with just over 12 minutes to go.

Still down 11 with 10:04 left, Henderson scored six straight including making four-of-four free throws. After Oakland split a pair of free throws on the next possession, Henderson hit a 3-pointer. IUPUI forced a miss on the other end and then D.J. McCall drew a foul and hit both free throws to get IUPUI within three, 64-61.

IUPUI couldn’t get any closer though. Oakland pushed the lead back to eight and IUPUI answered, but couldn’t make another big push. After Oakland pushed the lead to nine with 3:44 left, IUPUI got back within four. Brennan stole the ball and was fouled in transition, but missed the second free throw. With 60 seconds left, Oakland’s Martez Walker hit a shot and drew a foul from Brennan, his fifth, to put them up six. IUPUI missed on their end and were forced to foul.

Despite being a double-digit underdog and their late push, it was still a loss. The Jaguars once again failed to prove their only road win this season wasn’t a fluke. In the last two games, they’ve led for a total of 33 seconds and trailed for 78:01 out of 80 minutes.

For now, at least, it doesn’t matter how bad they’ve been on the road. They can sweep the dust under the rug as they finish out the season with five of six at home before the dust-ball comes back as they travel to Detroit for the Horizon League Tournament.
