South Bend, IN- The Notre Dame Fighting Irish had their biggest win of the season on Saturday night when they defeated the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels 80-76 at Purcell Pavilion.
The Irish were led by Bonzie Colson and Demetrius Jackson who scored 19 points a piece. They trailed by double digits early on in the first half, but a late first half run made the score 39-30 at the break.
North Carolina was led by Marcus Paige who scored 21, but had little help from his supporting cast.
Notre Dame outscored the Tar Heels 50-37 in the second half and made their free throws late to secure the victory. They won despite shooting 3-16 from 3-point range, but Colson and Zach Auguste each had 10 rebounds against Carolina’s strong frontcourt.
After time expired, the Notre Dame student section stormed the court in a nationally televised game on ESPN. They are now 7-4 in the ACC and 16-7 on the season.
This year’s college basketball season has been unpredictable to say the least, and Saturday was no different. The top 2 teams in the country both went down, including Oklahoma‘s loss to Kansas State earlier in the day.
The Irish will have a quick turnaround when they play at Clemson on Monday night.
