No. 13/15 Butler Bulldogs Drop Senior Day Game Against Seton Hall

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The #13/15 Butler Bulldogs hosted the Seton Hall Pirates at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 4. Seton Hall junior F Desi Rodriguez scored a game high 21 points as the Pirates defeated the Bulldogs, 70-64. The game was also Butler’s Senior Day and the final regular season home game of the season. Butler falls to 23-7 (12-6 BIG EAST) as Seton Hall improves to 20-10 (10-8 BIG EAST).

“This is a disappointing loss,” said Butler Head Coach Chris Holtmann. “Seton Hall got to more loose balls than we did and made some threes when we got scrambling defensively in the second half. We wanted to win this one for our fans, and especially our seniors. Disappointing that we couldn’t get it done today.”

Seton Hall opened the game on an 8-0 run as junior F Desi Rodriguez opened the game with a three-pointer. Trailing 8-0, graduate transfer G Avery Woodson connected on a three to give Butler its first points of the game at 17:45 mark. With the score at 11-5, junior F Kelan Martin entered the game and scored the next seven Butler points, including a make from deep, to cut the lead to 14-12 with 12:41 remaining in the first half. A steal by junior F Tyler Wideman led to a Wideman fast break and foul on the layup attempt. Wideman hit both attemts to tie the game at 14-14 with 12:19 remaining before halftime. The seven points from Martin, Wideman free throws and another three-ball from Woodson were all part of a 15-0 run that gave Butler a 22-14 lead at the 8:43 first half mark. But the Pirates would no go away that easily. The Pirates fought back to tie the game at 25-25 with 4:32. The lead traded hands in the closing minutes before two free throws from Woodson tied the game and eventially gave the Bulldogs a 36-35 lead with 41 seconds remaining before the break. Two more free throws from redshirt senior G Kethan Savage gave Butler the 38-35 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs shot 52.2 percent (12-23) from the field in the first half, including 40% (4-10) from three. Seton Hall finished at 56 percent (14-25) from the field, including 36.4 percent (4-11) from three.

Senior F Andrew Chrabascz opened the second half scoring with a jumper in the paint to extend the Butler lead to 40-35 with 19:16 remaining. Butler held the lead for the majority of the game and extended it to 10 at 57-47 on a Kelan Martin three with 7:03 remaining in the game. But the Pirates went on a 9-0 run immediatey after and the game was soon tied at 59-59 on a three by Seton Hall freshman G Myles Powell with 4:01 remaining. Butler retook the lead on a third three by Kelan Martin at 64-63 with 1:58 remaiing in the game. But junior G Khadeen Carrington responded with a layup to give the Pirates the 65-64 lead with 1:26 remaining. Another Powell three gave the Pirates the 68-64 lead with 37 seconds remaining as the Bulldogs were unable to respond on field goal attempts down the stretch.

The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 40.4 percent (21-52) from the field, including 28.6 percent (6-21) from three. Seton Hall finished the game at 49 percent (25-51) from the field, including 38.9 percent (7-18) from three.

Junior F Kelan Martin scored a team high 19 points on a 7-15 (46.6%) shooting day, including 3-7 (42.9%) from three. Kelan also led the Bulldogs with six rebounds for his third consecutive game leading the Bulldogs in both scoring and rebounding. Graduate transfer G Avery Woodson joined Martin as the only other Bulldog in double figures with 13 points on 4-7 shooting (57.1%) performance from the field, including a 3-4 (75%) performance from three. Senior F Andrew Chrabascz had a game-high five assists, the third time in the last three games that he has paced the Bulldogs in that category. Redshirt senior G Kethan Savage added nine points.

The game marked the final Hinkle Fieldhouse performance for the team’s six seniors – Chrabascz, Savage, Woodson, redshirt senior PG Tyler Lewis, senior G Steven Bennett and senior G Trey Pettus.

Seton Hall out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 35-24. The Butler bench scored 32 points compared to eight for Seton Hall.

Desi Rodriguez scored a game high 21 points. Junior F Angel Delgado and Khadeen Carrington joined Rodriguex in double figures with 20 points and 17 points respectively. Seton Hall has secured the #5 Seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.

The Bulldogs open BIG EAST Tournament play Thursday in the quarterfinals. Butler will play the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between No. 7 seed Xavier and No. 10 seed DePaul. Butler’s game on Thursday tips at 7 p.m. on FS1.
