INDIANAPOLIS, IN– Butler sophomore G Kellen Dunham has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 15. Dunham, who helped Butler to a victory over Purdue in the third annual Crossroads Classic, is the first Butler player to earn the conference honor.
Dunham scored 25 points and grabbed four rebounds against Purdue to help Butler improve to 3-0 at the Crossroads Classic, a one-day basketball event in downtown Indianapolis featuring Butler, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue. The 6-6 guard hit eight of 16 shots from the field, including two of four from beyond the three-point range, and he connected on seven of 10 shots from the free throw line.
Butler’s scoring leader tallied 16 points in the first half against Purdue, helping Butler overcome an early eight-point deficit. He then added nine points in the final period, when the Bulldogs held off a late Purdue comeback attempt.
Earlier in the week, Dunham scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed four rebounds in just 19 minutes in Butler’s 100-41 victory over Manchester.In the two games, Dunham shot a scorching 57.1% from the floor, 57.1% from three-point range and 75% from the free throw line.
Billy Garrett, Jr., of DePaul was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, while Cleveland Melvin of DePaul, Davante Gardner of Marquette, Sterling Gibbs of Seton Hall, Darrun Hilliard of Villanova and Justin Martin of Xavier were chosen to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Butler will be on the road for its lone game this week. The Bulldogs will visit longtime rival Evansville on Saturday, Dec. 21, for a 3 p.m. (ET) contest at the Ford Center. The game will not be televised, but can be heard on 1070 (AM) The Fan and on 107.5 FM.
