BLOOMINGTON, Ind – When James Blackmon Jr. went out last year prior to the Big 10 slate of the schedule, everyone wondered how the Indiana Hoosiers would replace such a dynamic scorer. Where would the loss of the scoring come from?
IU used a replacement by committee approach as they know you can’t replace a player like Blackmon with just one guy. It panned out as IU won the outright Big 10 championship and made a Sweet 16 run in the NCAA Tournament without Blackmon.
That situation helped this team have the same approach when another star went down on Wednesday night.
OG Anunoby is likely going to be a first round NBA Draft pick whenever he enters the draft, so replacing a guy like that is no easy chore. When Anunoby went down with an ankle injury late in the win over North Carolina on Wednesday night, everyone wondered how IU would replace someone like that in the lineup.
They used a replacement by committee approach. This time, it was with Juwan Morgan and De’Ron Davis.
The duo big men stepped up big time in the first game without Anunoby on Friday night against SIU Edwardsville as Morgan scored a game-high 18 points in going a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. He also had 10 rebounds as well.
Davis, chipped in 14 points in going 4-for-6 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line.
Today against Southeast Missouri State, the duo did it again, as Morgan was perfect for a second straight game in going 4-for-4 from the field and scoring 11 points in 22 minutes. Davis, went 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from the line in scoring 14 points in 16 minutes himself.
Overall, Morgan has scored 29 points in shooting 12-for-12 from the field while Davis has scored 28 points and being 9-for-14 from the field and 11-for-15 from the charity stripe.
If they can continue this output, then IU will be fine without Anunoby. Now, imagine is this production stays when Anunoby comes back. These two will be doing this off the bench.
