West Lafayette, IN. – The 27-point underdog Jaguars haven’t won a road game yet this season and Purdue is undefeated on their home court. Despite their struggles in the first half recently, IUPUI gave Purdue a startle. They jumped out to a 19-10 lead before Purdue finally took control. The Boilermakers used a 16-2 run to retake the lead and control. They followed it up with a 20-0 run to erase any doubt before delivering Matt Painter’s 300th win and handing IUPUI their fourth straight loss, 86-61.
Aaron Brennan cooled off after Wednesday night’s explosion and finished with just six point. Maurice Kirby picked up the slack though scoring a career high 16 points on 12 shots with four rebounds and two steals. Jaylen Minnett and T.J. Henderson both scored in double figures as well, but they were all three out shined by Carsen Edwards. Edwards scored 27 on 17 shots to go along with four rebounds.
It was a pleasant surprise to see IUPUI take an early 19-10 lead. In the last two weeks against lesser competition they faced a 20-point hole at the half or shortly after. Down 10-7 seven minutes in, Minnett drew a foul on a three-point basket and knocked down all three free throws. The Jaguars forced two missed 3-pointers on the next possession before Minnett hit one of his own. IUPUI’s 3-point defense was one of the bright spots. Despite Purdue shooting 54 percent overall, IUPUI held them to just 8-for-26 (31 percent) from three.
After a timeout and a Henderson a 3-pointer, Elyjah Goss stole the ball and found Henderson for a transition three to cap off a 12-0 run. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, their offense fell apart over the next 16:40. They were outscored 44-12 during the stretch and gave up runs of 16-2 and 20-0.
The road doesn’t get much easier for IUPUI as they travel to take on Washington State next Saturday. Despite losing their last three in a row, IUPUI will be heavy underdogs again as they pursue their first road win.
