Indianapolis, IN. – IUPUI had just one day off after their worst offensive performance in over a season. Monday couldn’t come soon enough though and they jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead. The Jaguars flirted with doubling Anderson’s score for much of the game and came away with a 75-43 win.
Evan Hall was missing for IUPUI tonight with an ankle injury, but Aaron Brennan made sure nobody knew any better. He finished with 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting with six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. T.J. Henderson didn’t score in the second half, but fueled the offensive attack in the first half with 10 points and two assists.
IUPUI took a 41-21 lead into the half. Anderson tried to make a push to keep the game competitive. They scored five points out of the break to cut the lead to 15, but Brennan answered back with five points of his own. With 10:54 remaining and IUPUI still up 20, Evan Borgman tipped in a missed Maurice Kirby layup triggering a 13-0 run. Three consecutive baskets at the rim followed by a three-point basket from Jaylen Minnett put IUPUI up 64-33. Two minutes later Chad Hudson hit two free throws to give IUPUI their biggest lead of the night, 66-33.
The defensive was stellar against Anderson. The Jaguars held them to 17 percent shooting from long range and 26 percent overall while forcing 23 turnovers. Still the team still has work to do. They had a much better game offensively than on Saturday, but still struggled turning over the ball. Anderson excelled at denying entry passes and jumping the passing lanes on the perimeter, forcing 19 turnovers. The Jaguars shot efficiently and exploited their size advantage in the paint to overcome the turnovers, but it won’t be as easy against bigger and more talented opponents.
D.J. McCall returned to the lineup Monday night. He came off the bench to score three points with two rebounds and four assists. Expected to be a starter this season, it’s been a disappointing start. He missed the first game for violating team policy and shot just one-for-three with three turnovers in the second. After the game, Assistant Coach Matt Crenshaw suggested it’s up to McCall if and when he works his way back into the starting lineup.
The Jaguars will have go on the road to take on Eastern Illinois on Friday and should be 100 percent with Hall returning from injury. The game will tip at 8:30 pm.
