It was an early morning for the Indy Fuel as they faced the Toledo Walleye on Wednesday morning. The Fuel’s only win against Toledo this season came in the first game of the season at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. In the other two meetings the Walleye have handed the Fuel losses.
The first period began slow for the Fuel as the Walleye controlled the first half of the period. About halfway into the first period, Toledo strung together a few passes and got the puck to Scott Czarnowczan who roofed the puck short side over Mac Carruth.
The Fuel responded about five minutes later when Ben Marshall got the puck at the point, faked a slap shot and passed the puck to Peter Schneider, who was standing back door and tied the game at one. This was Schneider’s first game back from injury.
The second period began very slow for both teams. The teams traded chances until about 14 minutes into the period, when Toledo would score two goals in :35 seconds. Zach Nastasiuk picked up a bouncing puck and scored to make the score 2-1. Then, Kyle Bushee scored short side on Carruth to make the score 3-1.
The third period didn’t start in the Indy favor. Two minutes into the period, Toledo’s Nastasiuk centered a puck to Alden Hirschfeld and he made it 4-1 early in the third. Toledo continued to control play until about five minutes remaining in the third when Indy started to develop chances but all were either saved by Jeff Lerg or blocked by Toledo players.
Mac Carruth started for the Fuel on Wednesday and stopped (shots here) while Jeff Lerg started for the Walleye and stopped (shots here). Indy will play three games in three nights this weekend starting with two road games against the Evansville IceMen. They will then return home to host the Walleye again on Sunday.
