Helio Castroneves Fastest in Final IndyCar Practice on Carb Day

INDIANAPOLIS – Team Penske wasn’t happy with their qualifying effort last weekend for this year’s 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 (11 a.m. ET/ABC/INDYCAR Radio Network). Will Power was the only one to qualify in the top nine, with the rest coming from 18th on back.

On Friday though, they showed that their race pace may prove to be the ones to beat.

Three-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves led all 33 drivers in Friday’s final one-hour practice session from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with a speed of 227..377 mph in his No. 3 Chevrolet. He was sixth overall in Monday’s race practice as well.

That leads everyone to believe that the popular Brazilian will easily charge forward from his 19th starting spot on Sunday.

His teammates were up front with him, with two more of his teammates inside the top 10 as well. Josef Newgarden was eighth fastest while Juan Pablo Montoya was ninth.

Will Power was 11th and Simon Pagenaud 15th.

Takuma Sato who’s having a phenomenal month of may was was second fastest on Carb Day from the 2.5-mile oval turning a lap of 226.802 mph in his No. 26 Honda. Sato, will start fourth this weekend and was fifth overall on Monday too.

Two Chip Ganassi Racing drivers in Tony Kanaan (226.757 mph) and pole sitter Scott Dixon (226.685 mph) were third and fourth respectively on the speed chart on Friday.

Rookie Fernando Alonso rounded out the top five with a speed of 226.608 mph in his No. 29 Honda.

Overall, Honda had five of the top six speeds, but they also saw their seventh engine fail with James Hinchcliffe’s No. 5 Honda blowing after just 29 laps.

This is it for race preparation, as next up is just the Indy 500 on Sunday.
