INDIANAPOLIS, IN – It is August, and that means football. The Butler Bulldogs will begin the quest for an unprecedented third consecutive Pioneer Football League championship when more than 100 players report for the start of fall camp on Monday, August 11. The Bulldogs will participate in four weeks of preseason drills in preparation for the 2014 season-opener at Wittenberg on Sept. 6.
Head coach Jeff Voris, beginning his ninth season at Butler, will have 36 returning letterwinners on hand when the team assembles for its first meeting. Included in that group are nine starters from last year’s 9-4 club, which shared a second straight PFL crown and became the league’s first team to advance to the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs.
Six of Butler’s returning players earned All-PFL honors a year ago. Offensive lineman David Tiwari was a second team all-league pick in 2013, while offensive lineman Michael Demos, defensive linemen Kyle Annis and Glen Sommers, placekicker Jon Treloar and return specialist Marquese Martin-Hayes each earned honorable mention recognition. The Bulldogs also return defensive back David Burke, who led the team in tackles last season.
The first day of camp is scheduled as a “move-in” day with team meetings, equipment check-out and medical screening. The team’s first day on the field will be on Tuesday, August 12, when the Bulldogs will hold the first of five “no-pads” workouts. Full practice will begin on Sunday, August 17.
Butler opens the 2014 campaign with back-to-back road contests before returning to the Butler Bowl for the home-opener against Taylor at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 20. The Bulldogs will face their first PFL foe the following week when Jacksonville visits for a noon contest.
