Butler Bulldogs Defeat Taylor On the Road

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Butler Bulldogs picked up their second win of the 2016 season with a 27-14 performance Saturday night on the road against the Taylor Trojans. The Bulldogs, now 2-1, held Taylor scoreless over the final 27 minutes of the contest to get the win. Taylor is now 1-3 on the season.

Butler is now 6-0 all-time against Taylor.

Redshirt senior QB Malcolm Weaver had 214 yards passing and another 119 yards on the ground to lead the Butler attack. 70 of his rushing yards came on a second-quarter rushing touchdown that gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead.

Taylor scored a pair of touchdowns before and after halftime to tie the game at 14-14. A pair of field goals from freshman K Drew Bevelhimer and a 15-yard touchdown run from redshirt junior RB Duvante Lane led the Bulldogs to the final 27-14 score.

Butler’s defense would not allow Taylor any points after the 12:35 mark of the third quarter, forcing five consecutive punts and then a turnover on downs on Taylor’s final drive of the game that began with 2:36 to play. Taylor had just 75 yards rushing in the contest (on 30 carries) compared to Butler’s 240 yards on the ground.

Redshirt junior WR Nick Weaver caught five balls for 87 yards to lead Butler’s receiving corps. Sophomore WR Pace Temple had 83 receiving yards.

The Bulldogs got the win without converting a third down, going 0-for-11. The Butler defense forced Taylor into only 3-of-13 conversions.

Junior S Isaak Newhouse, redshirt senior LB Sean Horan and junior LB David Starkey led Butler with 10 tackles apiece.

Butler opens up Pioneer Football League play Saturday at Campbell.
