Butler Bulldogs Close 2016 Season with Loss at Drake

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Butler Bulldogs, looking for a win on the final game of the season, dropped a 28-14 decision on the road against the Drake Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs finish the season with a record of 4-7 overall and 2-6 in Pioneer Football League play. Drake is now 6-4 (5-2 PFL).

Redshirt senior QB Malcolm Weaver threw for 154 yards and an interception and ran for another 57 yards and a touchdown to lead the Butler offense. Redshirt junior RB Duvante Lane had 63 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown for the Bulldogs.

Butler had a 302-293 advantage in total yards on the day, and held Drake to just 47 rushing yards on 34 attempts.

Drake got out to a 14-0 lead with a pair of touchdown passes by Grant Kraemer in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Butler responded with a 1-yard touchdown run by Weaver to pull within 14-7 with 3:53 remaining in the first half.

The home team would score the first two touchdowns of the third quarter to take a 28-7 lead before Lane scored from one-yard out with 2:34 remaining in the quarter. That would be the final after a scoreless fourth quarter. Kraemer finished with three touchdown passes and 246 yards through the air.

Senior LB David Starkey led the Butler defense with 12 tackles, including a sack and a forced fumble. Redshirt sophomore DT Matt Hawkins had a career-best seven stops from the defensive tackle position. Redshirt sophomore CB Mike Cerone and redshirt junior DL Curt Beckman each had a sack for the Bulldogs.

Redshirt senior P Ian Dobek had a 76-yard punt in the contest, which breaks the Butler record of 72 yards by Mike Morgan against Morehead State during the 2007 season.

Sophomore WR Pace Temple caught two passes for 22 yards, giving him 978 receiving yards on the season. That is the fifth-best single-season mark in Butler history.

The Bulldogs will look to current redshirt sophomore QB Will Marty and WR Pace Temple to lead the Butler passing attack next season. Duvante Lane will lead the ground attack after a breakthrough campaign this season.
